Most recently, Dowell was the assistant winemaker at Alpha Omega Winery and, prior to that, held winemaking positions at Bonny Doon Vineyard and Villa Maria Estate in New Zealand. In her new position, Dowell will over- see all aspects of winemaking at the family- owned winery. ONX acquires vineyard ONX Wines, a family-owned winery, announced it purchased Kiler Canyon Vineyard, a 50-acre property located in the Willow Creek district of Paso Robles. The vineyard, formerly owned by Don Hofer, is planted to Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Tempranillo and Viognier. ONX is based in Paso Robles and had previously pur- chased grapes from the vineyard. New faculty and staff at Fresno State California State University, Fresno, announced two new faculty members and an alumnus have joined its viticulture and enology team. Dr. Miguel Pedroza and Dr. Qun (Kristy) Sun are new assistant professors of enology, while Fresno State alumnus Tom Montgomery was hired as winemaker for the Fresno State Win- ery. Pedroza holds a Ph.D. in enology from the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Spain and Sun received her Ph.D. in wine chemistry from Cornell University. Montgomery received his bachelor's degree in enology from Fresno State and has produced award-winning wines in vari- ous grapegrowing regions of California. Trotta joins Jamieson Ranch Linda Trotta is the new winemaker at Jamieson Ranch Vineyards in Napa County. Trotta previ- ously was the winemaker at Swiftwater Cellars in Washington state and, prior to that position, director of winemaking at Gundlach Bundschu Winery in Sonoma Valley. She has worked harvests throughout the world, including Italy, South Africa and Chile. In her new role, Trotta will be responsible for the Double Lariat and Reata brands. Bisson retires from UC Davis After more than 30 years of teaching and re- search at the University of California, Davis, Dr. Linda Bisson retired from the Department of Viti- culture & Enology on Sept. 1. An expert in yeast, Bisson is also credited with elevating the na- tional and international wine industries through her outreach and extension efforts. Dutcher Crossing promotes new winemaker Dutcher Crossing winery, located in the Dry Creek AVA, announced Nick Briggs has been promoted to winemaker. Briggs, who appren- ticed since 2012 under founding winemaker Kerry Damskey, will continue to consult with Damskey and owner Debra Mathy. In his new role, Briggs will oversee all winemaking opera- tions along with newly appointed assistant winemaker, Cass Gossage. NORTHWEST Devison joins Middleton Family Wines Peter Devison is the new head winemaker for Mid- dleton Family Wines in Olympia, Wash. Devison is the former winemaker for EFESTE/Oldfield Cellars in Woodinville, Wash., and prior to that worked harvests in New Zealand and Australia before relocating to Washington state.
