22 WINES&VINES October 2017 WINE INDUSTRY NEWS CALIFORNIA Poulsen rejoins Acumen Henrik Poulsen is the new director of winemaking and executive manager of Acumen Wine in the Atlas Peak AVA of Napa County. Poulsen previously worked at the winery from 2013 to 2015, when he worked closely with founder Denis Malbec before taking a hiatus to focus on his own wines. Poulsen replaces Steve Matthiasson, who took the wine- maker position in 2016 after the death of Malbec in a car accident. A native of Denmark, Poulsen came to the Napa Valley in 2000 after a 13-month stay in Bordeaux. He worked at Newton Vineyard from 2000 to 2006 before joining Alpha Omega Winery as assistant winemaker. In 2013, Malbec recruited Poulsen to work at Acumen, which released its first Cabernet Sauvignon wine in 2016. Comfort joins SSU staff Honore Comfort, former executive director of the Sonoma County Vintners, is the new execu- tive in residence at the Wine Business Institute at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park. Comfort will lead efforts to create strategic programs and engagement opportunities for wine business students, alumni and industry leaders, according to the statement announcing her appointment at the university. After leading the vintners group for nine years, Comfort most recently was the president of Brack Mountain Wine Co. in Sebastopol, Calif. New GM and winemaker at Provenance Matthew Glynn is the new general manager and senior winemaker for Provenance Vineyards, located in Rutherford. Glynn joins Provenance Vineyards from Acacia Vineyards, where he was the senior winemaker for the past 10 years. Dur- ing this time, he also was senior winemaker for Orogeny, a Russian River Valley AVA Chardon- nay and Pinot Noir producer. Glynn began his career in Napa Valley at Domaine Chandon and Beringer Vineyards. Fetzer's Martin dies Longtime Fetzer Vineyards winemaker Dennis Martin died Aug. 13 following a battle with can- cer. Prior to retiring in 2015, Martin was a pivotal part of the winemaking team at Fetzer Vineyards in Mendocino County for more than 30 years, ultimately holding the role of vice president of winemaking with responsibility for overseeing the entire collection of wines. In a statement released by the winery, Martin was remembered as "a conscientious winemaker and admired leader" who also served the American Society for Enology and Viticulture as member, direc- tor and president. During his time at Fetzer, Martin is credited with establishing and building several relationships with quality grapegrowers and helping to launch the CORO Mendocino County wines program. "Dennis Martin was a terrific winemaker and inspiring colleague who left an indelible mark on those he knew," said Giancarlo Bianchetti, CEO of Fetzer Vineyards.
