Michelle opened a new and expanded visitor center in Woodinville, Wash. Designed by the architecture firm BCRA Seattle and built by Wilcox Construction Inc. of Edmonds, Wash., the new visitor center represents a $7 million investment honoring the winery's 50th anniversary. The new center is double the size of the previous tast- ing room, totaling 22,731 square feet, and features an interactive blending room, four private tasting salons, a modern 80-seat theater and a restaurant-style kitchen. Oregon Wine Experience raises $1 million The recent Oregon Wine Experi- ence event raised more than $1 mil- lion for childrens healthcare. Held in Medford, Ore., the event featured 103 wineries representing 15 of Oregon's 17 AVAs and was made possible by 327 volunteers who served 3,670 attendees, up 2,400 from 2016. Proceeds directly ben- efit the Children's Miracle Network and other healthcare programs sup- ported by Asante Foundation. CENTRAL Offill joins William Chris Tony Offill is the new assistant winemaker at William Chris Vine- yards in Hye, Texas. Offill brings five years of winemaking experi- ence to the position having com- pleted harvests in the Texas Hill Country and Texas High Plains and apprenticed with mentors from McPherson Cellars and Compass Rose Cellars. In his new role, Offill will work with Chris Brundrett, co- founder of William Chris Vineyards. Bonarrigo family honored The Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine inducted Mitchell and Karen Bonarrigo, owners of Mes- sina Hof Winery & Resort in Bryan, Texas, as master knight of the vine and master lady of the vine. The honor, in recognition of the cou- ple's efforts promoting the Texas wine industry, was bestowed at the winery's 40th anniversary cel- ebration. The organization, which is part of the larger group The Federation Internationale des Con- freries Bachiques, also recognized the Bonarrigo children, Sophia and Paul Anthony, as lady in waiting and second squire of the Brother- hood of the Knights of the Vine. EAST Winemaker becomes first U.S. woman MW The Institute of Masters of Wine an- nounced 14 new Masters of Wine, three of whom are U.S. winemak- ers: Nova Cadamatre, director of winemaking for Canandaigua Win- ery, owner of Trestle Thirty One in the Finger Lakes AVA and the first female U.S. winemaker to achieve the title; Yashodan "Billo" Naravane, owner and winemaker of Rasa Vine- yards in Walla Walla, Wash.; and Morgan Twain-Peterson, winemaker and owner of Bedrock Wine Co. in Sonoma, Calif. The new members were chosen from around the globe and must sign a Code of Conduct as well as pass the Master of Wine examination that includes theory, practical exams and an in-depth study on a wine-related topic. Buttonwood wins N.Y. Governor's Cup Buttonwood Grove Winery's 2016 Finger Lakes Riesling won the Governor's Cup at the 2017 New York Wine & Food Classic. The competition, now in its 32nd year, was hosted by the New York Wine & Grape Foundation and held at the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel in Wat- kins Glen, N.Y. The Governor's Cup is the highest award of the contest that drew 958 entries. The Winery of the Year award recognizes the winery with the best overall show- ing and this year went to a tie be- tween CK Cellars from the Finger Lakes Region, and Sparkling Pointe from the North Fork of Long Island.
