56 WINES&VINES January 2017 Quirico Decordi Vinicola Decordi How important is knowing how to innovate in the wine field? In a rapidly changing world, technological advancement is a critical success factor for a company in order to conquer increasingly competitive mar- kets. Innovation is decisive and being up to date is essen- tial. Therefore, an event like SIMEI where you can find ev- erything you need to innovate, restructure and grow is not to be missed. A very much anticipated event... Absolutely. I've been to all the editions ever since I was a child and now I go back with my employees and techni- cians. SIMEI gives a complete overview of the best technol- ogy that exists in the wine field. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that at SIMEI the ma- chines are physically present, which makes it possible to ex- perience their functioning and operation directly. What do you expect from this year's event in Munich? SIMEI has always been a very busy event and promises to be the same in Munich too. The fact that it is to be held with drinktec will renew the suc- cess of the event and will bring it to the attention of po- tential new clients and mar- kets before it returns to Italy in 2019. SIMEI is a trade fair that we really feel is ours and, not surprisingly, the top pro- ducers are Italian. Domenico Zonin Zonin 1821 How important are innova- tion and technology in your company? It is always said that wine is made in the vineyard and that is true, since it is tied to the territory and traditions. It then has to be promoted though and therefore the technologi- cal part is essential. Today, Italian wine is considered an excellence and this thanks to the improvement of the quali- ty of the products, the profes- sionalism of the agronomists and winemakers and, of course, technology. What is SIMEI for your com- pany? SIMEI is the leading trade fair in the world for wine technol- ogy where every two years the best companies come togeth- er to show their new products. Hence, it is an opportunity to have all the excellent prod- ucts together. What's more, the exhibitors physically bring the machines to the trade fair, an expensive operation car- ried out only for a big event like SIMEI, giving the public the possibility to get a close look at the best technology available actually at work. What do you expect from the 2017 edition in Munich? Until the 1980s most of the market for winemaking equip- ment was in Italy and France. Today, vineyards and wineries are scattered all over the world, from the United States to Australia. SIMEI in Munich will be an opportunity for ex- hibitors, thanks to its staging together with drinktec, to have an even more interna- tional audience and to imple- ment exports. With the Italian Edition in 2019, the focus will return to the Italian market, which is the first producer of wine in the world, while still keeping an important base of foreign visitors. Sergio Dagnino Caviro How important are innova- tion and technology in your company? We are faced with huge com- petition where all nations, with and without a long tradi- tion, are involved in the pro- duction of wine. We are faced with increasingly demanding consumers who want fragrant wines and with certain char- acteristics: this is achieved by the combination of good grapes and the use of technol- ogy, crucial to the quality ex- pected by the market. What is SIMEI for your com- pany? SIMEI is an example of Italian pride. In recent years, Italy may have lost ground in sev- eral strategic sectors but this has not happened in the field of wine technology. This is a sector where Italy is posi- tioned first in the world and SIMEI is the flag. Not being there as an exhibitor or as a visitor would be a great op- portunity lost.
