162 WINES&VINES January 2017 WINE INDUSTRY NEWS WINE EAST W ashington, D.C.—The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) is considering approval of 21 grape variety names submitted by grape breeders or wineries in 10 states east of the Rockies. Three New York hybrid variet- ies developed Dr. Bruce Reisch, director of the grape-breeding pro- gram at Cornell University's New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, N.Y., are on the list. Arandell, a red variety, and Aromella, a white hybrid, were named in 2013. The third Cornell variety, "Geneva Red 7," is already on TTB's list of approved varieties. Cornell University, the developer and owner of the grape variety, wants to drop the "7" from the name to make it "Geneva Red." Two other varieties in New York are the red hybrid Diana (probably a seedling of Catawba), which has been grown in the Finger Lakes since the mid-1800s, and Saperavi, a red Vitis vinifera grape variety from the nation of Georgia. George Girouard began breed- ing grapes in his backyard in Okla- homa City, Okla., in 1975. After making many crosses with wild vines without much success, Gir- ouard obtained a Vitis aestivalis vine from Missouri grape breeder John Grinstead. The four varieties on TTB's list all have Grinstead's vine (JG #3) as one of their parents: By George is Ruby Cabernet x JG #3; Plymouth and Southern Cross are both crosses of Merlot x JG #3, and Valjohn is Cabernet Franc x JG #3. Tom Plocher, a Minnesota grower, crossed the red variety Petite Pearl in 1996 and named it in 2009. Elmer Swenson, the "fa- ther of northern grape breeding," started breeding grapes in Wis- consin just after World War II and then at the University of Minne- sota. Deja Vine Vineyards and Winery in Iowa petitioned to have Swenson's white hybrid Esprit ap- proved. Kevin and Kyle Peterson, the father-son winemaking and grape-breeding team at Wine- Haven Winery in Chisago City, Minn., submitted Chisago, a cross of St. Croix and Swenson Red, that's cold hardy to -40° F. Two Cornell table grapes in- clude Marquis, a white seedless grape crossed 1964, and Sheri- dan, a cross of Herbert and Wor- d e n , r e l e a s e d i n 1 9 2 1 . T h e University of Arkansas' Muscat- flavored red table grape Jupiter was patented in 2002. Clover Meadow Winery in Shell Lake, Wis., submitted Bluebell, a "blue" grape developed at the University of Minnesota in 1944, and King of the North, another red table grape of "uncertain lineage." Other grape names submitted include: Riverbank, a red Vitis ri- paria grape (North Dakota); and from Texas, Mustang, a Vitis mus- tangensis, and Black Spanish and Jacquez, synonyms for Lenoir, a red hybrid (vinifera x aestivalis) from the early 19th century. —Linda Jones McKee Wine East Covering Eastern North America TTB Proposes New Names for Eastern Grape Varieties 251 Gambee Road, Geneva, NY 14456 Phone: 315-759-2118 Toll free: 888-234-6752 Fax: 315-789-1848 Email: cjennings@vancemetal.com Website: www.vancemetal.com Quality Rugged 12 gauge, Custom & Stock Stainless Tanks Catwalk Systems • Pump Over Carts • Custom Hoppers, Chutes & Bins PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA Wine Packaging by Packaging Designed & Manufactured by a Wine Maker, for a Wine Maker 4138 Vineyard Road Stewartstown, PA 17363 Tel: 800-292-3370 Fax: 717-993-9460 Phone: 717-993-2431 Naylor Wine Cellars is a lifetime member of Wine America, Pennsylvania Wine Assoc, Ohio Wine Producers and NY Wine & Grape Foundation WPN is a premier supplier to over 2,000 wineries and wine & spirits shops.
