January's Contributors A Jean L. Jacobson first-time contributor to Wines & Vines, Jean Jacobson brings years of experience in winery labs and cellars to her coverage of oxygen management during winemaking: "Is TPO the New TCA?" beginning on page 36. She explores the positive effect that sensitive new oxygen-measuring tools may have on quality control. Jacobson is a consulting winemaker in Sonoma County, Calif., and author of the book "Introduction to Wine Laboratory Practices and Procedures." Her 15 years of experience in winemaking production was mostly with Jackson Family Wines, and she is participating in the Winemaking Certificate Program. Robert Nicholson and Josh Grace tional Wine Associates, the Healdsburg, Calif.-based boutique strategic advisory firm that provides corpo- rate finance, mergers and acquisition services to the wine industry. Their recent news-making mergers and acquisi- tions include the 2008 sale of various Constellation wineries and brands to Ascentia Wine Estates, the 2010 Pacific Rim Winemak- ers sale, the 2011 Laurel Glen Vineyard sale to private investors and the recent sale of Edna Valley Vineyard from Diageo to Gallo. Incorporated in 1990, IWA has completed transactions valued at more than $1 billion. Beginning on page 76 of this issue, Nichol- son and Grace share how winery owners should prepare for a sale, including the valuation process. R tephen Yafa has been around the vineyard block. He is a lifelong wine drinker, veteran freelance writer, author about wine and other subjects and, for the past six years, a winemak- er and winery brand owner. Still, the wines he tasted at the Solms-Delta Wine Estate in South Africa during the 2011 harvest were S quite different from anything he had tasted before. A rare tech- nique initiated there by Mark Solms, the neuroscientist owner, dries the grapes while still on the vine, concentrating the flavor components, preserving the acidity but losing 40% of the water. See "Extreme Wines on the Vine," page 104. January's Cover Michael O'Neil, mechanical engineer for Vacuum Barrier Corp., had to act fast to capture the image on this month's cover. In the photograph, Vacuum Barrier's Easy Dose system delivers liquid nitrogen, which quickly vaporizes to minimize oxygen ex- posure in bottled wines. Read more about total package oxygen starting on page 36. 4 Wines & Vines JAnUARY 2012 Stephen Yafa obert Nicholson and Josh Grace work for Interna- Nicholson Grace A Member of Wine Communications Group Inc.
