J ANU AR Y NEWS Know Your Leafroll Enemy to Fight It P Different strains are best approached differently, UC advisor tells growers aso Robles, Calif.—Napa County UC Extension advisor Monica Cooper discussed managing grape- vine leafroll disease at the Sustain- able Ag Expo held in November at the Paso Robles Event Center. Cooper ex- plained there are 10 recognized grapevine leafroll-associated diseases, and while they all cause the same symptoms, they are not transmitted in the same ways. For this rea- son, she said, it is important to have your vines tested to find out which strain of the virus is infecting your vineyard. Virus 3, for example, is spread by mealy- bugs and is causing the most problems in Napa County; virus 2, meanwhile, is preva- lent in Monterey County and is only spread by humans. Grapevines also can have more than one strain of grapevine leafroll disease. "Know what you've planted and what you're planting. Your rootstock may not show symptoms of disease, but as soon as Mealybugs are not the vector for all types of leafroll virus, says UC advisor Monica Cooper. you graft something onto it, you have dis- ease," she said. Mealybugs can acquire leafroll virus after about an hour of feeding, Cooper said. They reach maximum efficiency after 24 hours of feeding. Conversely, mealybugs can inoculate clean plants with the disease after feeding for about an hour, with maximum efficiency after 24 hours. Once growers know what type of the virus they have, the next step is to learn the lifecycles for the primary vectors. —Kate Lavin winesandvines.com Learn more: Search keyword "enemy."
