Changes at Okanagan Crush Pad Matt Dumayne is the new winemaker at Okanagan Crush Pad in Summerland, B.C., taking over for Michael Bartier, who is leaving the role to have more time to focus on his own wine brand, Bartier Family Vineyards. Bartier will continue to work as a winemaking con- sultant for Okanagan Crush Pad. Dumayne joined the winery in 2013 and oversees the winemaking of Okanagan Crush Pad's brand Haywire as well as 40 Knots Estate Winery, Singletree, Coolshanagh and Vibrant Vines. Wisconsin seeking wine, cider specialist The University of Wisconsin, Madison, is seeking to fill a new position of "outreach specialist" for the state's wine and cider indus- tries. The position is being funded through the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture. The specialist will help wineries and cider com- pany owners better understand microbiology, sanitation and equipment issues. The outreach specialist will also train winemakers to detect off-flavors and to address underlying causes for wine and cider flaws and provide access to the university's labs and experts. The school plans to have the position filled by January. Virginia wine sales continue to grow State officials an- nounced that Virgin- ian wineries set a new record for wine sales during the 2014 fiscal year, selling 521,000 cases of Vir- ginia wine. Accord- ing to a report from the governor's office, sales grew by 2% over the previous fiscal year total of 511,000 cases. Sales in 2014 raised more than $1.7 million in tax revenues. Vir- ginia is home to 248 wineries producing 780,000 cases of wine per year, according to the Wines Vines Analytics winery database. Grant funds for vineyard research The New York Farm Viability Institute an- nounced it is investing $1 million in 14 differ- ent projects to improve farm profitability in New York.
