The simplicity of the Sparkling Brut label is deceptive: Like the top strip, the pressure-sensitive, coated label stock has the necessary wet-strength properties to withstand coolers and ice buckets. The basic stock is dull silver, reverse printed on an opaque dark, dark green so that type has an extremely subtle silver sheen. The coat of arms motif on top strip and front label has a dark blue shield; on the front label, the shield is embossed on a textured background. The strip, Bus noted, is a common element in tequila packaging and predated the large foil capsules weve become accustomed to in recent decades. The refined simplicity of Buena Vista Sparkling perhaps reflects the status of sparkling wine packaging in general. Sparkling wines are generally traditional, Bus commented. While other wines have become more flashy, sparkling wineseven low endtend to be more traditional. Raising the hood While other packaging elements are open to negotiation, a wire hood remains essential for most sparkling wines closed with a natural or synthetic cork. The pressure of the CO2 in those tiny bubbles means that even gentle handling may trigger premature discharge of the closure: embarrassing! The wire hood (not the foil, if present), secures the closure in the bottle until the time is right. Although they have been around a long time, the wire hoods represent the best and most secure way of holding the cork. They look attractive and they are certainly traditional, said Jeremy Bell, general manager of Benicia, Calif.-based Rivercap USA, which has a wire hood manufacturing facility in the village of Oiry in Frances Champagne region. I see no changes there. Graham Wilson, president of A.O. Wilson in Ontario, Canada, said hes observed an overall increase in sparkling wine production across the board. I believe the reasoning is that wine has moved to the forefront as a beverage of choice. With the increase of wine consumption, sparkling also has increased, but at the same ratio. As for hoods, The four post wires with cap have not really changed much, but our supplier did inform me that in the past 60 years, the quality of wire, colors of wire, thickness and precision of cutting caps have all improved, Wilson said. The biggest improvement in this area has come in the printing techniques and quality in the past 15 years.
