WINEMAKING (Continued from page 53.) was slow to adopt crossflow technology, but trial and error by crossflow system suppliers made winemakers more comfortable using it during the past decade. Crossflow sales continue to grow both domestically and internationally, she adds. Valley Pipe sells Spadoni-brand crossflow filters. Mitch Longnotes that winemakers use crossflow because it can complete the filter process from beginning to final filtering without using several different machines. Crossflow filter systems are sold in three versions: manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic. Customers choose the version and size that best fits their needs. VA Filtration USA designs, manufactures, sells and offers crossflow filtration services to the U.S. wine industry. General manager Bryan Tudhope says, Our technology is unique in that we are the only manufacturer and supplier of spiral wound systems in the U.S. He says that American-made spiral-wound systems have benefits over traditional hollow fiber systems, including no issues with fiber breakage, lower replacement costs and simplicity of use. VA Filtration plans to launch a new service of renting crossflow systems for lot sizes from 120 gallons to 350 gallons. These systems will also be available for purchase Davide Criveller of Criveller Group says that winemakers are switching to crossflow as a means to decrease filtration times and labor. The filters he sells are used mainly for fine filtrations. We do not sell crossflow for high solids. He sells both completely automatic and semi-automatic crossflow filters from 20 square meters up to 100 square meters. Theyve been adding more automation and increasingly efficient and longer-lasting cartridges. Taste preferred to DE Bill Hernandez of American Tartaric Products (ATP) says, Today the trend within the wine industry is to move away from filter aids like DE due to health hazards. He adds, Winemakers in most cases prefer the taste of wine clarified through a crossflow filter as compared to DE filtration. The wine retains aromatics and does not have an earthy or mineral taste associated with DE. In addition, todays crossflow equipment is fully automated and the operator merely needs to start up the equipment. It continues to run until either a cleaning in process is programmed or the tank is finished. SEE US AT UNIFIED, BOOTH #1034 Win es & Vin es JA N UA RY 20 13 55
