Filter cloths woven from monofilament yarn offer an alternative. They employ individual round, continuous single-core plastic wire to form the cloth. They have a very smooth surface that can be additionally smoothed on one side. These filter cloths have the further advantage that they are more permeable and thus allow higher flow rates. Filter throughput is typically measured as the air permeability. The air permeability with monofilament cloths is 10- to 30-fold higher than most multi-filament fabrics. Due to the lower thread count per area, there are fewer spaces in which turbid substances can settle. In this type of cloth, it is difficult for turbid particles to lodge, with the effect that the risk of clogging is small and cleaning is very easy. In addition, the discharge behavior of the filter cake is considered by many winemakers to be superior. However, cloths made of monofilament yarn are more fragile.
