Tchelistcheff distinguished himself in the Napa Valley after following in the footsteps of his iconic father, Andre Tchelistcheff. Dimitri Tchelistcheff's career in winemaking culminated at Jarvis Estate, where he oversaw wine- making for 29 years. He was born in Paris, France, and was fluent in Spanish, French and Russian. At the age of six, Tchelistcheff came with his family to Napa Valley shortly after the end of Prohibi- tion. As a teenager, he served as his father's lab assistant conduct- ing wine analyses prior to pursu- ing a degree in enology at the University of California, Davis. Benovia Winery names assistant winemaker Adolfo Hernandez is the new as- sistant winemaker at Benovia Winery, a family-owned winery in the Russian River Valley. Hernan- dez was formerly harvest enolo- gist at Pahlmeyer Winery in St. Helena, and prior to that position he worked as assistant winemaker for Checkerboard Vineyards in Cal- istoga. In his new role, Hernandez will help oversee production of all Benovia's wines, including estate- grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. NORTHWEST Winemaking team promotions at King Estate King Estate in Eugene, Ore., pro- moted three members of its wine- making staff: Brent Stone to head winemaker, Barrett Rosteck to associate winemaker, and Andrew Belzer to assistant winemaker. Stone began at King Estate as laboratory manager in 2011 and most recently held the position of winemaker. Rosteck joined the winery in 2013 and worked as cellar master and assistant wine- maker before his promotion. Belzer joined the team in 2014 and was King Estate's enologist. Greg Jones to join Linfield College Climatologist Greg Jones will leave his position as professor of environmental science and policy at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Ore., to oversee the wine-education program at Linfield College. Jones has spent the past 20 years at SOU, where he also served as director of the school's Division of Business, Communica- tion and the Environment. Linfield announced a wine studies minor in in February 2016, and a wine stud- ies major is now in the works. Willamette Valley group names new leader The Willamette Valley Wineries Association and Oregon Pinot Camp has named Morgen McLaughlin executive director. McLaughlin replaces retiring ex- ecutive director Sue Horstmann. McLaughlin will promote and publicize the more than 230 win- eries and tasting rooms located along the 100-mile valley between Portland and Eugene, Ore. She previously was executive direc- tor of the Santa Barbara County Vintners Association and formerly acted as president and CEO of the Finger Lakes Wine Country Tour- ism Marketing Association. CENTRAL Leelanau pioneer closing winery The owner of the oldest commer- cial wine business in Michigan's Leelanau Peninsula announced that he's closing the winery. Bernie Rink posted on Boskydel Vineyard's website that effective Jan. 1, 2018, the winery will close. The winery specialized in wines made with hy- brid grapes including Vignoles and Greg Jones
