EAST ASEV funds sour rot research Megan Hall is the recipient of the 2017 Presidents' Award for Scholarship in Viticulture from the American Society of Enology and Viticulture (ASEV), which includes a $12,500 scholarship. The Cor- nell University doctoral student focuses on plant pathogens and was recognized for her work on sour rot. Hall also has cataloged microbial diversity on develop- ing grapes with the USDA's ARS Grape Genetics Research Unit and studied the role fruit flies have in sour rot development. Judge clears path for Virginia winery A circuit court ruled in favor of a Virginia winery owner who can now proceed with plans to open his business in a historic manor house. Chris Pearmund is the owner of Effingham Manor Winery and had faced a lawsuit by 12 nearby homeowners who argued the winery was in violation of the homeown- ers' association covenant. Previous association leadership had granted Pearmund an exemption from subdi- vision rules for his plans, and follow- ing the judge's decision Pearmund can now open the winery. Pearmund has built an 8,800-square-foot win- ery facility nearby and will be using the historic home, which dates back to 1765, as the tasting room. SUPPLIERS Americo Amorim dies at 82 Americo Amorim, who built Cor- ticeira Amorim into the world's largest supplier of wine corks and other cork products, died July 13. He was 82. Amorim was believed to have been Portugal's richest man, and Forbes estimated his fortune at nearly $5 billion. He in- herited a small stake in his grand- father's cork company at the age of 18 and steadily expanded it to a hugely successful global business. New rep for Cork Supply Wes Ward, founder and presi- dent of Santé Beverage Supply LLC, will represent Cork Supply USA as an independent sales contractor in states east of the Mississippi, as well as Texas, Arkansas and Missouri. Ward has more than 20 years of ex- perience in the beverage supply industry and founded Santé Bev- erage Supply to provide prod- ucts and consulting to the wine, spirits and brewery industry. Santé represents the entire Cork Supply, Tonnellerie Ô and Cre- ative Oak portfolio of products. Avery Dennison names new VP for label and packaging materials Gernot Ritzdorf is the new North American vice president of sales, label and packaging materials for Avery Dennison. He will lead sales, customer service and technical support teams. Ritz- dorf has been with the company for more than 12 years working in various capacities including leading both regional and global sales organizations. ERO acquires leaf-remover division German vineyard equipment supplier ERO-Gerätebau is now distributing the leaf remover de- veloped by French firm Siegwald, and ERO will begin manufacturing and selling the remover in 2018. The Siegwald implement removes leaves with bursts of compressed air. According to the supplier, if the machine is used shortly after bloom it can help remove smaller berries, reduce yields and help prevent fungal diseases by blow- ing air through the canopy. New account manager at Universal Universal Packaging in Vernon, B.C., appointed Braden Stranks account manager for Canada. Stranks has a degree in business administration from Okanagan College and a sales and market- ing background in the beverage industry.
