January's Contributors A William Fuchs n article about winery construction, page 44, goes beneath the surface as William Fuchs, a Ph.D. geologist, details the cave construction and installation of equipment at Arkenstone, an ambitious new underground winery in Angwin, Calif. Fuchs works for the Northern California cave contractor Magorian Mine Services, which dug Arkenstone's elaborate caves. He is an expert regarding the geology of Napa hillside vineyards and has studied soils in Nevada, Portugal and Turkey. Liza Gross journal PLoS Biology (Public Library of Science). She writes about everything from molecules to ecosystems, and she's returned to her roots to write about the science of wine in this issue. (See "Making Sense of Sulfites" L on page 52.) Gross started her career in publishing more than 20 years ago at Wine Spectator, and her features have appeared in High Country News, Sierra magazine and Tikkun. Thomas Ulrich A here is nothing like a crop failure in your own Sonoma County vineyard to remind you about the value of crop insurance. Con- tributor and winemaker Stephen Yafa's crop loss in 2010 was covered, thankfully. In his article, "Choosing Crop Insurance," page 60, Yafa looks at the whole picture of winegrape T insurance and explains how to choose what's best for your finan- cial situation. In recent years Yafa has reported for Wines & Vines about barrels and coopers. January's Cover Arkenstone Vineyards' fermentation hall hides its automation and sophisticated flexibility underground, where a mammoth barrel storage cave also resides. His article beginning on page 32 describes how two high-quality wineries used optical sorting in 2010 and how effective they found it to be. Ulrich has written about computer technology for many years and teaches journalism at San Jose State University in California.
