The funds came from the Michigan Talent and Economic Agency. Ohio wine pioneer dies Ken Schuchter, founder of Valley Vineyards in Morrow, Ohio, died Oct. 10 at the age of 85. Schuchter planted 20 acres of hybrid and vinif- era grapes in 1969 and opened Valley Vineyards winery the following year. As the first commer- cial grapegrower in the Ohio River Valley since before Prohibition, "He was largely responsible for the resurgence of winegrowing in southwest Ohio," according to Donniella Winchell, execu- tive director of the Ohio Wine Producers As- sociation. Schuchter was a founding member of the organization and served on the first Grape Industries Committee, which laid the foundation for the growth of the Ohio wine industry from 13 wineries in 1975 to 192 today. Valley Vineyards was nearly destroyed by fire in June 1983, but it was rebuilt by the following February and has grown to 107 acres of vineyard and produces 35,000 cases per year. Schuchter was "techni- cally retired" from the winery, which is now man- aged by his son and daughter-in-law, Kenny Joe and Dodie Schuchter, and his grandson, Joe Schuchter. Round Barn hires new winemaker Brian Carlson is the new winemaker at Round Barn Winery, Distillery & Brewery in Baroda, Mich. Carlson worked at wineries in Califor- nia, Oregon and Washington for the past 25 years and also will be the consulting winemaker for Berrien Springs, Mich.-based winery Free Run Cellars, which is also owned by brothers Matt and Chris Moersch, who own Round Barn. University of Minnesota hires enology specialist Drew Horton is the new enol- ogy specialist for the University of Minnesota in Min- neapolis. A former winemaker who pro- duced wines in California and Minnesota with cold-hardy varieties, Horton most recently was a field specialist for the Midwest Grape and Wine Industry Institute at Iowa State University in Ames. As enology specialist, Horton will be part of the University of Minnesota Grape Breeding and Enology Project, a research group that has been involved in developing cold-hardy cultivars for wine production and leading the way with ap- plied research for the best enological practices for making wines with regional grapes. EAST New director of PLCB The Pennsylvania Li- quor Control Board in Harrisburg, Pa., appointed Charlie Mooney as the board's new execu- tive director effec- tive Nov. 5. Mooney has worked for the PLCB for nearly 40 years and before his promotion was PLCB's chief operating officer.
