100 WINES&VINES November 2016 PACKAGING W e keep our eyes on packaging products and trends through- out the year. Trade shows such as the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium in January and our own Wines & Vines Packaging Conference in August provide close-up views of the wide world of wine packaging and face-to-face meetings with suppliers from around the world. For the Winery & Vineyard Supplier Guide published each November, we elicit updates for every category of wine industry suppliers, from vineyard and winery equipment to pack- aging and marketing services. For this compan- ion feature, we cherry-picked the most intriguing new packaging methods and services and bring you their stories. Go haute Not every winery wants a traditional white or trendy black label (see "Shedding Light on Dark Labels" in the October 2016 issue). Color is always eye-catching, and using an original painting created by a professional can con- tribute recognition and genuine high style to your bottles. Paula Sugarman's Sugarman Design has provided packaging design for food and wine companies for 17 years. During this time, Sug- arman has created original paintings expressly for some wine clients, notably the Harvest Moon label for a late-harvest wine from Wis- consin's Door Peninsula Winery. "We agreed it would have a harvest moon on it, and I could do whatever else I wanted." In recent years, Sugarman has devoted more time to her paintings, and her style has become more abstract and expressionist. She'd be happy to use some of these works for label/bottle designs and is also willing to provide exclusive commissions specific to winery clients. Watermark Design introduced hand letter- ing for wine labels. For those who are bored with standard fonts and styles, hand lettering can provide casual to elegant text. The hand- executed lettering is scanned and vectorized into the label design. Watermark is not a label printer, but it works closely with printers to execute its vi- sion, from custom dies to paper selection, em- bossing, foil or other techniques KEY POINTS The annual Winery & Vineyard Supplier Guide allows purveyors to the wine industry an opportunity to highlight new services and products. We pored through the packaging section to find intriguing examples and contacted the sources for more information.
