Fresh ideas for winegrowers Hans-Peter Wöhrwag Wöhrwag Winery Stuttgart, Germany have made wine under their epony- mous label since 2003, and Steve Matthiasson has worked for several clients including Araujo Estate, Dalla Valle, Spottswoode, Chappel- let and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars. In 2012, Matthiasson was part of the Acumen's founding team, which developed the first estate vineyard after owner Eric Yuan purchased it from Dr. Jan Krupp. Changes at Wine Spectator Kim Marcus, the managing editor of Wine Spectator since 1999 and a 28-year employee of the company, will move from New York City to California later this year to become a senior editor and bureau chief of the Napa Valley office. Making the announcement, Wine Spectator owner Marvin Shanken also stated that Cordelia Winton will take Mar- cus's place as managing editor in New York. She is a 22-year mem- ber of the magazine staff. Marcus is a California native and no stranger to Napa Valley, having worked for the St. Helena Star newspaper for several years in the 1980s. Napa Vintners make donations The Napa Valley Vintners will give $2.8 million in proceeds from its annual Auction Napa Valley to various local groups that support children's education. The group invested $800,000 in the Napa Val- ley Early Learning Initiative (NVELI) and already has provided $3 million to the NVELI, which is working to close the educational achievement gap for English language learn- ers in Napa County. The nonprofit organizations receiving the remain- ing $2 million are: Aim High, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the North Bay, Boys & Girls Clubs of Napa and American Canyon, Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Helena and Calistoga, Child Start, Community Resources for Children, Napa CASA, Napa- Learns, On the Move and Summer Search. The vintners group also pledged $1 million over 10 years to support The Culinary Institute of America's new campus in the for- mer Copia building in Napa. NORTHWEST New winemaker at Culmina Jean-Marc Enixon is the new vine- yard manager and winemaker at Culmina Family Estate Winery in Oliver, B.C. Enixon worked for a decade at a Bordeaux winery and also has experience at wineries in Sonoma County and China. At Culmina, located in the Okanagan Valley, Enixon will work with con- sulting winemakers Alain Sutre and Pascal Madevon, who recently transitioned from the winery's full- time winemaker to consultant. JFW building Oregon winery Jackson Family Wines (JFW) is constructing a winery near McMin- nville Municipal Airport in Oregon that will be ready in time for the 2017 harvest. The winery will be used to produce Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris wines from the company's vineyards in Oregon. According to the com- pany, the winery will be designed to handle small lots of grapes, with hand-sorting lines and multiple small, open-top fermentors. The facility will include a laboratory and offices for the winemaking and production teams. JFW has become one of the largest vine- yard owners in the Willamette Valley, and the company's Oregon portfolio includes Zena Crown Vineyard, Gran Moraine and Penner-Ash. La Crema and Siduri also offer Willamette Valley wines. The new winery footprint allows for future growth of these programs. CENTRAL Michigan school secures grant for winery Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, Mich., received a $1 mil- lion state grant to help fund the construction of the college's Great Lakes Wine Institute.
