22 WINES&VINES October 2016 WINE INDUSTRY NEWS Riboli Family opens new winery Riboli Family Wine Estates held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate its new winery in Paso Robles. The winery will be used to produce wine for the family's portfolio of brands, which include San Antonio Winery, San Simeon, Opaque and Maddalena. Designed and constructed by Reiss Design Studio and J.W. Design & Construction, the new winery facility features both closed- and open-top tanks and a cellar with four separate barrel rooms. The entire winery is air cooled to save water, and all process wastewater and storm water is reclaimed for irrigation purposes onsite through a membrane bioreactor. NORTHWEST Oregon 2015 harvest up 5% by tonnage The 2015 Oregon wine grape harvest totaled 73,518 tons, 5% more than in 2014. Yields across the state were up, according to the annual vineyard and winery census report by Southern Oregon University, with the most significant increases occurring in the South Wil- lamette Valley and Umpqua Valley. More than 60% of the state's planted acreage is Pinot Noir, and the variety accounts for 67% of all vineyard production. The average price per ton for Pinot Noir in 2015 was $2,353, which is a 6.5% de- crease from 2014's average price of $2,518. The entire value of the state's wine grape harvest was pegged at $176 million, with Pinot Noir ac- counting for $119 million. The entire report can be found online at industry.oregonwine.org. Washington charity auction raises millions The 29th annual Auction of Washington Wines held in August in Woodinville, Wash., raised more than $3 million, breaking the record $2.5 million raised in 2015. Proceeds from the auc- tion go to Seattle Children's Hospital and the Washington State University Viticulture and Enology Program. The auction has raised nearly $40 million since it began in 1988. CENTRAL Winery secures grant for flash Blackstar Farms in Suttons Bay, Mich., secured a $210,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture for a flash détente machine. The winery said the machine would help it make higher quality wines and be a resource for other wineries in the region. Students from Northwest- ern Michigan College and the Michigan State University extension are also planning to study the effects of flash détente on wine quality. The winery is planning to have the machine operat- ing by 2017. Chankaska takes governor's cup Chankaska Creek Ranch & Winery in Kasota, Minn., won the Minnesota Governor's Cup for the best Minnesota grape wine at the 2016 Interna- tional Cold Climate Wine Competition in St. Paul, Minn. The winning wine was a 2015 La Crescent, and the winery's 2015 Kasota Rosé won double gold in the competition that drew 354 wines from 64 wineries in 13 states and Canada. EAST New leader for Finger Lakes group The Finger Lakes Wine Alliance in Geneva, N.Y., named Tracey Dello Stritto as its new execu- tive director.
