Fresh ideas for winegrowers Hans-Peter Wöhrwag Wöhrwag Winery Stuttgart, Germany CALIFORNIA Margene acquires Roxo Port Cellars Michael and Margene Mooney, owners of Chateau Margene in Paso Robles, Calif., purchased Roxo Port Cellars, which is also located in Paso Robles. Roxo Port Cellars was founded in 2005 by Jeff and Kim Steele. The winery specializes in producing small-lot Port-style wines from grapes grown in Paso Robles and the Cienega Valley. The Mooneys and Steels have shared a tasting room for the past three years. PinotReport founder dies Greg Walter, former president of Wine Spectator, founder of The Pi- notReport newsletter and publisher, died from cancer in late August. He was 58. Walter was one of the early employees at Wine Spectator after it launched in San Diego in 1976. He rose to the position of president before leaving in 1994. For the past 15 years, Walter published his newsletter focused on Pinot Noir wines and ran the Carneros Group consulting and publishing firm. Fetzer names new director of winemaking John Kane is the new director of winemaking and winery operations for Fetzer Vineyards in Ukiah. Kane joins Fetzer after recently found- ing his own label, JCK Wine Co., in 2014. Prior to that, he worked at Rosenblum Cellars, where he started his career as an intern in 2001. In this newly created posi- tion, Kane will oversee winemaking for the Fetzer brand and contribute to innovation and quality improve- ments for all brands in the com- pany's portfolio. Additionally, Kane will assume management of lab, logistics and cellar operations. New head winemaker at CK Mondavi Charles Gilmore is the new head winemaker of CK Mondavi in St. Helena. Gilmore joins the winery after working as winemaker at Fetzer Vineyards for the past 12 years and will replace John Moynier, who is retiring after working at CK Mondavi for more than 30 years. Gilmore and Moynier will work to- gether through the 2016 harvest. Margrit Mondavi dies Margrit Biever Mondavi, vice president of cultural affairs at Robert Mondavi Winery, died Sept. 2. She was 91. Mondavi was the widow of Robert Mon- davi, a pioneer of the modern- day California wine industry. She and her husband worked as founding patrons of Copia in Napa, Calif. In 2001, they made a large gift to the University of California, Davis, to establish the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science, and to launch the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. Russian River Partners makes Lake County buy Russian River Partners in Wind- sor announced its acquisition of the Brandt Ranch vineyard in Lake County. The 120-acre property includes 108 acres planted to Cab- ernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cab- ernet Franc.
