74 WINES&VINES August 2016 WINE INDUSTRY NEWS WINE EAST C harlottesville, Va.—The Monticello Wine Trail has 31 wineries as members, but none of them have a tasting room in Charlottesville, a city central to the wine trail with a population of nearly 50,000. Mi- chael Shaps Wineworks came close, though, opening a new tasting room, Wineworks Ex- tended, in an old warehouse on Avon Street Extended, just south of the center of Charlottesville. When Michael Shaps first leased the 16,000-square-foot warehouse building, he used it for case goods storage. While he was renovating the space to include a bottling facility, he realized he could convert a two-story office space at one end of the building into a tasting room on one floor with event space upstairs. Another incentive for opening a tasting room at that location was the pro- posed shopping center, anchored by a Wegman's market, that will open this fall. Wineworks Extended reflects its industrial location. The black ceilings are high, and the wiring and conduits are exposed; the c o n c r e t e f l o o r s a r e s e v e r a l shades of gray; the tasting bar Wine East Covering Eastern North America Michael Shaps Opens Tasting Room Outside Charlottesville top is also made of concrete that i s s u p p o r t e d b y b l a c k p i p e braces. Several of the walls have X-style wine racks: One wall is for Michael Shaps Wineworks wines; another is for wines Shaps makes in Burgundy for his Maison Shaps label. He describes the overall style of the tasting room as "bare bones." As with the tasting room at the winery 11 miles south, the focus of Wineworks Extended is defi- nitely on the wines. Six taps at the tasting bar are used for filling glasses and carafes of wine for on- site consumption as well as growl- ers for taking home. Shaps hopes to finish reno- vating the second floor office area to serve as an event space later this summer. This room, which can hold about 50 people, has an even better view of Cart- er's Mountain, and a catering kitchen will be adjacent to the event space. —Linda Jones McKee Michael Shaps Wineworks has a new tasting room just outside Charlottesville, Va., and additional event space will open later this summer.
