24 WINES&VINES August 2016 WINE INDUSTRY NEWS NORTHWEST Double Canyon to build winery The Crimson Wine Group announced plans to build a winery for its Double Canyon brand in West Richland, Wash. The winery will offer 47,000 square feet of production space and have an initial capacity of around 50,000 cases per year. Construction is expected to begin this month and is scheduled to be done by the same time next year. New winemaker at Noviello Noviello Vineyards, a family-owned winery in Chelan, Wash., hired Garrett M. Grubbs as its winemaker. Prior to joining Noviello, Grubbs held positions as assistant winemaker at Swiftwater Cellars in Cle Elum, Wash., and Brian Carter Cellars in Woodinville, Wash. Most recently, Grubbs was winemaker and manager at Plain Cellars in Leavenworth, Wash. CENTRAL Montana growers hold second conference The Montana Grape and Winery Association, which formed in 2014, held its second annual conference in June in Missoula, Mont. The event drew nearly 100 people and included seminars about grapegrowing, winemaking and other topics. According to the WinesVines Analytics winery database, the state has 16 wineries. President of St. Julian in Michigan dies David Braganini, the son and current president of Paw Paw, Mich.- based St. Julian Winery, which his parents founded, died at age 65. Opened in 1921, the winery is the oldest in Michigan and one of the first to pro- duce dry wines from vinifera grapes. EAST New leader for Long Island Wine Council Steve Bate is leaving the post of executive director for the Long Island Wine Council in Riverhead, N.Y., and will be replaced by the group's current marketing director, Ali Tuthill. Bate has been the executive director for the past 12 years and helped increase the group's membership by 40%, revenues by 200% and secured more than $3 million in grants. Brock to host cool-climate conference Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, will host the 10th International Cool Climate Wine Symposium in July 2020. Held every four years, the event focuses on wine production in cooler regions and just recently took place in Brighton, England. SUPPLIER G3 to distribute Boisé alternative products The Oeneo Group and G3 Enterprises Inc. an- nounced that G3 will distribute the Boisé brand of oak products. The Boisé line is owned by the French company Vivelys, which is part of the Oeneo Group. Vivelys will continue to have consultants based in California to help address customer needs and answer technical ques- tions about the oak chips.
