Direct to Consumer O ff-premise sales of domes- tic wine grew steadily through June, marking the third month in a row that mea- sured 5% monthly growth and 6% 52-week growth. A review of the top 20 table wine brands in the multiple-outlet and convenience store data from IRI, the Chicago, Ill.-based mar- ket-research firm, showed that Barefoot wines from E. & J. Gallo Winery remained No. 1 in sales. Sutter Home stayed at No. 2, but Woodbridge by Robert Mon- davi passed Franzia box wines for the No. 3 spot. Bota Box at No. 18 and Liberty Creek at No. 19 nudged Livingston Cellars and Rex Goliath off the list. Bota Box from Delicato Family had the fastest sales growth rate (29%) among the top 20, and Black Box from Constellation grew by 15%. Constellation also had the fastest shrinking brand, Robert Mondavi Private Selection. Trinchero Family Estates' Ménage à Trois added 12% in sales while raising its bottle price by 34 cents. Off Premise Barefoot Remains No. 1 as IRI Channel Grows 5% T he value of direct-to-con- sumer (DtC) shipments from U.S. wineries grew by 10% in June, which is typically one of the four slowest months of the year for direct shipments. The 12-month sales total was up by 12%, which was the highest growth rate since September 2015. The 12-month value stayed above $2 billion for the fifth month. DtC shipments in June in- creased in value to $101 million, according to the Wines Vines Ana- lytics/ShipCompliant model. The volume of DtC shipments by U.S. wineries increased to 290,845 cases in June. Sonoma County wineries in the past 12 months continued to have their biggest DtC shipment success with Pinot Noir. It garnered a 34% share of the total DtC value and brought in 260% more dollars than Cabernet Sauvignon. Two years ago Pinot Noir was only 200% bigger in sales than Caber- net Sauvignon. Bunched closely behind Caber- net Sauvignon were three vari- etals with sales between $45 million and $30 million—Char- d o n n a y, Z i n f a n d e l a n d r e d blends—before sparkling wine in the sixth spot. To show Sonoma County's di- versity, the remaining other vari- etals and types from Sauvignon Blanc to Moscato and Syrah were worth $74 million.
