June's Contributors B Kent Benson enson is a certified wine educator living in St. Cloud, Minn. In this issue's Viewpoint piece on page 86, he aims to educate winery owners and marketing professionals about their websites. Winery websites frequently annoy and impede him in his searches for up- to-date, factual information to help lead tast- ings and teach wine appreciation. Rather than simply complain, however, he includes a five-point wish list. Benson's first piece for Wines & Vines appeared in the June 2009 issue. Tim Patterson P mith is a well-known wine processing expert whose current mission is to promote Postmodern Winemaking, which is also the title of his column that appears monthly in Wines & Vines. On page 76 he tackles one of the toughest issues in wine cellars: how to prevent or control Brettanomyces. Taking his S he concept of using (or should we say "allowing?") native yeast to ferment wine is as old as wine itself. Wines & Vines has covered the topic many times over the years as an alternative to cultured yeast. Few winemakers, however, live by spontaneous fermentation to the same extent as Sonoma T County's Greg La Follette. Thomas Ulrich has written many times about technology in winemaking, but on page 46 he reports in detail on La Follette's un-tech approach. June's Cover Though leafroll virus-affected vines may have you seeing red, industry pros in the fields of viticulture and enology share their innovative approaches to working with leafroll-affected vines and fruit, as detailed in our cover story on page 32. Cover pho- tograph from Sue Sim, Foundation Plant Services, University of California, Davis. 4 Wines & Vines JUne 2011 cue from the grapegrowing practice of Integrated Pest Manage- ment or IPM, he makes the case for Integrated Brett Management or IBM as the best way to keep the horsey-smelling beast at bay. Thomas Ulrich atterson writes the long-running Inquiring Winemaker column for Wines & Vines and has earned the respect of many winemakers, who say they read "the man in the hat" first in each issue. As those readers know, Pat- terson relishes myth busting. His column on page 72 mines that vein again, as he shows why the old Brix-to-alcohol conversion rate of 0.55 is no longer valid. Further, he reports on fascinating efforts to find or develop yeast strains that minimize alcohol. Clark Smith A Member of Wine Communications Group Inc.
