Robert "Bob" Steinhauer (left) is the former vine- yard manager for Beringer T Vineyards in St. Helena, Calif., where he worked for 25 years, and the 2008 Merit Award winner of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture. Richard Mendelson is an expert on vineyard and wine law. He heads the practice of Dickenson Peatman & Fogarty in Napa, Calif., and teaches wine law at the University of Califor- nia, Berkeley. He is also a grapegrower and wine producer. Laurie Daniel aurie Daniel interviews one of the most outspoken proponents of organic viticulture and dry farming: John Williams, the owner- winemaker at Frog's Leap Winery in Ruther- ford, Calif. Daniel quizzes Williams (page 40) about what measures he took to go organic, how soon he saw results and how he copes L with pest and disease challenges that make most growers reach for the synthetic pesticides and fungicides.
