Faces& Forums NEWSMAKERS Pinot in the City Willamette Valley vintners reach fans in home state host to more than 100 wineries and 1,100 ticket-holders from 27 states Sept. 10-11, when the Willamette Valley Wineries Association sponsored its first- ever Pinot in the City event in Oregon's most populous city. Earlier this year the WVWA hosted events in New York City and Seattle, offering the Willamette Valley's wineries a chance to reach consumers and distributors in those target markets. Pinot in the City featured barrel-making P demonstrations as well as discussions about soil samples and winemaking. A raffle held at the event included a grand prize of a trip for two to Hawaii. Proceeds from the raffle went to Ecotrust's Food & Farms Program and Salud!, an organiza- tion that provides access to health care services for Oregon vineyard workers and their families. Attendees nibbled on artisan foods such as hazlenuts and cheeses from the Willamette Valley. In addition to Pinot Noir—the official honoree at the event—representatives from Willamette Valley wineries introduced consumers and members of the trade to the Willamette Valley's other varietals and blends. Architect and urban planner Ernest Munch worked with landscape architect Douglas Macy to design the 47,000- square-foot event space. —Wines & Vines staff 26 Wines & Vines nOVeMBeR 2011 ortland, Ore.—A full block of Port- land's trendy Pearl District played Rick DeFerrari of Oregon Barrel Works gives a barrel-making demonstration.
