He has nearly 15 years of wine industry experience in California, Oregon, Australia and Washington. CENTRAL Silver Oak acquires Missouri cooperage Silver Oak winery of Oakville, Calif., is now the full owner of A&K Cooperage, becoming the only winery in North America to own and operate a cooperage. The winery purchased a 50% stake in the company in 2000, and recently acquired the remainder to ensure production standards and a secure supply of aged stave wood. While Silver Oak has focused exclusively on Cabernet Sauvignon aged in American oak barrels since 1972, the opportunity to purchase the cooperage arose during a period of strong demand for premium Ameri- can white oak, fueled by the inter- national market as well as the rise in U.S.-produced craft whiskeys and bourbons. Located in Higbee, Mo., the cooperage was founded by Dale Kirby and his father-in-law D.L. Andrews in 1972. After part- nering with the winery in 2000, Sil- ver Oak and the Kirbys purchased several hundred acres of Missouri oak timberland. Chateau Chantal goes solar Chateau Chantal Winery & Inn president and CEO Marie-Chantal Dalese joined U.S. Sen. Deb- bie Stabenow on May 29 to flip an oversized, ceremonial electric switch to celebrate the activation of the Traverse City, Mich., winery's new 148.5 kW solar array by Har- vest Energy Solutions. The winery expects the array, which is the larg- est of its kind in Michigan, to supply approximately 40% of its energy needs. State and federal grants covered most of the array's cost. St. James wins at international contest St. James, Mo.-based St. James Winery's 2014 Vignoles won Best White Wine honors at the Riverside International Wine Competition in Riverside, Calif. EAST Pennsylvania lawmakers pass shipping bill The Pennsylvania state House of Representatives passed a bill that would allow state residents to buy and ship wines from out-of- state wineries directly to their own homes. The state currently allows residents only to ship from ap- proved wineries to state-run liquor stores. If passed into law, the bill would require wineries to obtain a $100 license and verify the buyer and person receiving the wine is of legal age.
