32 Wines&Vines January 2015 wine industry news Linfield College names wine education director Ellen Brittan, general manager at the Carlton Winemakers Studio and owner of Brittan Vineyards, has been named director of wine education at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore. Brittan will work with Linfield's Division of Continu- ing Education to develop a wine education program that could include a variety of courses offered online or during the summer. Brit- tan is the former general manager and executive director of the Rudd Group in Napa, Calif. She and her husband Robert purchased a vine- yard in Oregon in 2004. Inaugural release for B.C. winery Monte Creek Ranch in British Columbia's Thompson Valley, near the city of Kamloops, has debuted its inau- gural release from the 2014 vintage. The Sidhu fam- ily, nursery and blueberry farmers from Mission, B.C., purchased the 1,200-acre ranch in 2009 to establish a vine- yard and winery. The property now includes a 40-acre vineyard, and an estate winery is currently being built. The vineyard is planted to cool-climate varieties such as Mar- quette and La Crescent. Michael Alexander is the winemaker, and Eric von Krosigk is the consulting winemaker. Erik Fisher, formerly with Andrew Peller Ltd. in Ontario, moved to Kamloops to work as the winery's general manager. Oregon auction raises $722,000 Tuality Healthcare Founda- tion's ¡Salud! event in Hills- boro, Ore., raised more than $722,000 for healthcare ser- vices for seasonal vineyard workers and their families. The event held Nov. 14-15 included two auctions that raised $200,000 and $522,000. A trip to New Zealand donated by Argyle Winery was the highest grossing item at $13,000, and a dinner with winemakers from Ponzi Vineyards, Che- halem and Elk Cove Vine- yards sold twice to raise a cumulative total of $23,000. CENTRAL Huber's expands distillery Huber's Orchard, Winery & Vine- yard held a grand opening and Repeal Day celebration Dec. 5 to showcase its expanded distillery and still house tasting room. The winery in Borden, Ind., has pro- duced brandy since 2001, but a new state law now allows the com- pany to make other spirits such as vodka, gin and whiskey. EAST Vinous acquires IWC Antonio Galloni's start-up wine review website Vinous, which is based in New York, N.Y., an- nounced it will acquire Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar. Vinous will add IWC's archive to its website. Tanzer will join Galloni as partner, editor-in-chief and lead critic.
