Canada's westernmost province is now home to 929 vineyards, of which 67.2% are winery owned or leased. The most widely planted variety is Merlot (1,563 acres), fol- lowed by Pinot Gris (1,114 acres) and Pinot Noir (1,073 acres). Pinot Noir replaced Char- donnay as the third most-planted variety since the institute issued its last report in 2011. The greater Okanagan Valley is home to 84% of B.C.'s vineyards, with the Oliver, B.C., sub-region accounting for 35.5%. Kanzler taking over at family winery Alex Kanzler will take over fulltime winemak- ing duties and become a managing partner of Sebastopol, Calif.-based Kanzler Vineyards, which his parents Stephen and Lynda Kanzler founded in 2004. Alex Kanzler first started making wine for the company in 2011 while also working at the custom-crush facility Vi- nify Wine Services. He most recently was the associate winemaker at VML Russian River Winery and Truett Hurst Winery. Terroir names new COO, general counsel Terroir Inc., founded by Charles and Ali Banks, announced Kevin McGee is the company's new chief operating officer and general counsel. Prior to joining San Francisco, Calif.-based Terroir fulltime, McGee worked for the com- pany on a per-project basis, helping with sev- eral acquisitions including Qupé, Evening Land Vineyards, Whetstone Wine Cellars and Maya- camas Vineyards. McGee will now oversee all partner relationships and act as the general counsel and chief legal officer for Terroir. Lula opens new facility in Mendocino Lula Cellars of Philo, Calif., opened its new winery and tasting room in the Anderson Valley of Mendocino County, Calif. The 22-acre property in- cludes a small production fa- cility, tasting room and 14-acre Pinot Noir vineyard. Plans are in place to open a 10,000-square-foot event space by next year. Details: lulacellars.com. Renovated adobe is Three Sticks tasting room Three Sticks Wines opened a new tasting room in one of the oldest buildings in Northern California. Near the square in the town of Sonoma, Calif., the Vallejo-Caste- ñada Adobe dates from 1842. In 2012, Bill Price, owner of Three Sticks Wines, pur- chased the property and began a nearly two- year preservation and renovation effort. His team worked closely with Sonoma historians Lula Cellars Tokyo Nagoya NORTHWEST and town officials to restore and preserve the house while turning it into a commercial property.
