M E T R I C S M E T R I C S C hicago, Ill.—Domestic table wine gained 1 percentage point in market share compared to imports in off- premise accounts during the past year, while domestic sparkling wines lost 3 points to imports, according to IRI. The table wine gain was much more sig- nificant in dollars, since table wine sales were 11 times larger than sparkling wine sales during the period ending Sept. 7. The 1% gain in market share related to 6% sales growth for domestic table wine and just 1% for imports during the previous 52 weeks, as reported by the Chicago-based market-research firm. California alone held 73% market share in table wine, followed by Italy as the leading import country and Australia, both of which shrank slightly in market share, and Washington, which gained less than 1% in market share but grew 8% in sales. New Zealand increased its market share by less than 1% but increased its sales by 22% from a relatively small base. In volume terms, domestic table wine held an 83% market share, as volume grew by 3.2% to 102 million 9-liter cases in the multi-outlet and convenience stores that IRI monitors via checkstand scan data. Imported volume dropped by 3%. In the sparkling wine category, both domestic and imported categories grew in sales—5% for domestic and 11% for imported. The volume gains were 4% and 10%, respectively. It is not surprising to see that prices per bottle rose—13 cents for domestic and 17 cents for imported sparkling. Italy held 29% market share of spar- kling sales, while France had 10% and Spain 5%. Prosecco was the fastest grow- ing sparkling wine type, increasing sales by 38%. Off-premise sales of domestic wine in general, combining table and sparkling wines, grew 5% in the four weeks ending Sept. 7 compared to the similar period in 2013, and grew 6% in the most recent 52 weeks. —Jim Gordon W i n e s & V i n e s n O V e M B e R 2 0 1 4 13 U.S. Table Wine Gains 1 Point in Off-Premise Market Share TTB LABEL APPROVALS Low per-label costs Gov't.
