22 W i n e s & V i n e s J U n e 2 0 1 4 Sam Sebastiani launches wine brand Sam Sebastiani, the origi- nal founder of Viansa Winery in Sonoma, an- nounced the launch of his new La Chertosa wine brand, which takes its name from a 14th century monastery in the Tuscany region of Italy. The inaugural release includes a 2012 Sonoma Valley Reserve Chardonnay, a 2012 Sonoma Valley Reserve Sangiovese and a 2012 Amador County Zinfandel. Details: lachertosawines.com. Clos du Bois founder dies Frank M. Woods Jr., one of the founders of Clos du Bois winery, died May 8 in San Fran- cisco at the age of 81. After serving in the U.S. Army and working in marketing and politics, Woods founded Clos du Bois with Tom Reed in 1974. The partners built the winery into one of the most popular U.S. brands before selling it in 1989 to The Wine Alliance, which would become Allied Domecq Wines USA. In addition to founding Clos du Bois, Woods was a chairman of the Wine Institute and a consultant to the wine industries of Bulgaria, Slovenia and Hungary through the U.S. government. Hess Collection adds solar to winery The Hess Collection's winery and distribu- tion facility in the Napa County town of American Canyon now features a solar power system by SolarCraft. The 649 kW array fea- tures 2,200 panels and covers 44,555 square feet, according to information released by the winery. The new system is expected to pro- vide for all of the facility's energy needs. The Hess Collection also plans to add solar power to the winery on Mount Veeder. Details: hesscollection.com. Trout named new COO at Broken Earth Winery Hillary Trout is the new chief operating officer at Broken Earth Winery in Paso Robles. Trout is the former president and COO of Villa San- Juliette winery, also in Paso Robles. Details: brokenearthwinery.com. Vine Cliff opens St. Helena tasting room Vine Cliff Winery opened a new tasting room designed by noted winery architect Howard Backen. The 4,000-square-foot tasting room in St. Helena is equipped with a solar-powered system to provide 60% of its needed electric- ity.
