M E T R I C S C ombined sales of domes- tic table and sparkling wines in April grew 6% in off-premise locations compared to April 2013, while the 12-month rate of growth stayed at 7%. Sauvignon Blanc was the fastest growing major white wine category, according to IRI, the Chicago, Ill.-based market-research firm. The middle and high price seg- ments grew rapidly during the four weeks ending April 20, IRI reported, but wines priced under $8 grew much more slowly, dragging down the average. Leading in rate of sales growth were bottled wines priced at $20-plus, which rose by 21% in sales to $21 million in April. The $11-$14.99 seg- ment grew by 14%, and the biggest price segment of all in terms of sales (bottles priced $8-$10.99) grew by 8% to reach $143 million. The fastest growing seg- ment of domestic table wine regardless of packaging type was premium box wine priced $3.50-$4.99 per 750ml equiv- alent. Sales in this category grew by 23% to $22 million. Sauvignon Blanc grows fastest Sauvignon Blanc was the fastest growing major white varietal off-premise, with an increase of 13% in value dur- ing the past 12 months for wines from all regions. The category experienced double- digit growth rates for every price segment from $8 per bottle and higher. Most varietal categories in IRI's off-premise data are dominated by California brands. The overall market share of California is 80% vs. 20% imports. But fast-grow- ing Sauvignon Blanc imports from New Zealand wines were No. 2 in popularity by value, with 29% market share. The top two Sauvignon Blanc brands during the pre- vious 12 months were from California: Cupcake and Woodbridge by Robert Mon- davi. The next four were all from New Zealand: Nobilo Regional Collection, Kim Crawford, Oyster Bay and Starborough. Chardonnay is by far the queen of white wines, claim- ing more than 50% market share by value and racking up sales of almost $1.8 billion during the past 12 months. Pinot Grigio/Gris and Sauvi- gnon Blanc are growing fast, while Riesling, white Zinfan- del and non-vintage California Chablis are shrinking. Domestic sparkling wines have been lagging behind table wines in growth, and the trend continued in April. Sales in this category grew by 4% in value and 3% in volume compared to April 2013, IRI reported. A 5% drop in sweet spumante-style sparkling wine dragged down positive perfor- mances of 6% for the extra- dry style and 5% for brut. —Jim Gordon M E T R I C S W i n e s & V i n e s J U n e 2 0 1 4 11 Off-Premise Sales Up 6% for U.S. Wines 1164 Lee Street, White Rock, B.C.
