Growth for $11-$19.99 Wines Surpass Overall 6% Rate S an Rafael, Calif.—Retail sales of domestic table wines priced in the teens increased rapidly this year, beating their cat- egory as a whole by several percentage points. Wines from $11-$14.99 and $15-$19.99 grew at 10% and 12% respectively through Oct. 7, according to the Symphony IRI Group (SIG.) These two segments accounted for 20% of the $3.7 billion spent at major U.S. food and drug stores where SIG analyzes scan data. Their growth rates were not as high as wines at $20-plus, which expanded by 17% in the same period, but they outperformed the three lowest-priced categories. Price reductions averaged $1.40 per case for $11-$14.99 and $3.23 per case for $15-$19.99. Domestic table wines as a whole grew by 6% in sales so far this calendar year. They are showing a slight deceleration in growth from the 52-week rate of 7%. Chocolate Wine Down 13% As Chocovine Loses 35% S an Rafael, Calif.—Shoppers looking for chocolate flavored wines to match the Halloween theme found at least 32 brands available at retail, but the previously fast-growing category began to shrink in the past year. Chocolate wine sales in major food and drug stores dropped 13% from a year earlier, according to Symphony IRI Group (SIG), due largely to a decrease in sales by the leading product, Chocovine Dutch Chocolate. The Chocovine brand, however, ac- counted for three of the top five offerings in the category, and its Espresso and Whipped Cream lines grew in sales. Based in the Netherlands, Chocovine Dutch Chocolate ac- counted for two-thirds of all sales, with $9.7 million. Wine firm Precept Brands of Seattle markets another of the most popular brands: No. 2 Chocolate Shop and Coco Rosso. IDL_Dir11 11/18/10 4:21 PM Page 1 Iván D.Lessner Process Solutions Inc.
