EAST Maryland wine pioneer dies John P. "Jack" Aellen Jr., one of the early winery owners in Maryland, died Sept. 22 in Naples, Fla. Aellen founded Ber- rywine Plantations/ Linganore Winecel- lars in Mt. Airy, Md., with his wife Lucille in 1971. The couple planted six acres of grapes in 1972 and opened the winery in 1976. Aellen also worked to establish the first American Viticultural Area in Mary- land. The Linganore Viticultural Area includes 90 square miles in the center of Maryland. He also founded the Frederick Chapter of the American Wine Society. Ravines Wine Cellars expands Morten and Lisa Hallgren, owners of Ra- vines Wine Cellars near Hammondsport, N.Y., purchased vineyards and a barn used for wine production from Carl Fribolin, owner of White Springs Farm Estate Win- ery located in Geneva, N.Y., on the west side of Seneca Lake. The sale involved 60 acres of land, 42 of which are planted to grapevines, plus the vineyard and wine- making equipment. Fribolin is retaining 100 acres of land, the White Springs Win- ery tasting room and the White Springs brand name.
