'Frankenstorm' Sandy topples barrels in Brooklyn, chases customers away in Finger Lakes
ancaster, Pa.—Fortunately, winemakers on the East Coast had finished harvest by the time super storm Sandy arrived Oct. 29. As a result, preparations for the hur- ricane were focused not on grapes but on the issues of flooding, winds and—for those near the coastline—storm surges. Even though Red Hook Winery, located on Pier 41 in Brooklyn, N.Y., tried to prepare for the worst, it took a direct hit from Sandy. The storm surge flooded the winery and other stores and businesses on the pier with 5 feet of water. Winery staff had sandbagged the entrances and elevated as much equipment and as many barrels of wine

While populous coastal areas of New Jersey such as Hoboken were flooded by super storm Sandy, most of the state's vineyard acreage is inland, and damage came from wind, not water.
