Developed in Illinois, the aromatic grape variety Traminette has Gewürztraminer as one of its parents. In his article "Traminette's Popularity Spreads Across the East" (page 156), Ray Pompilio tells the vineyard side of the story that led to growers and winemakers in Indiana naming Traminette the state's "signature grape variety." The grape has been in trials at Cornell since 1968 and at Purdue since 1992. Pompilio will discuss the experiences of two wineries growing and vinifying Traminette in a future article. JANUARY 2018 UNIFIED WINE & GRAPE SYMPOSIUM ISSUE WINESANDVINES.COM TOOLS FOR TODAY ON THE COVER For Spottswoode Estate winemaker Aron Weinkauf, glass viewing ports built into the JVNW tank on our cover are "great for experimentation and analysis." Rebecca Arnn captured the image while visiting the Napa Valley winery, where Weinkauf uses the tank to extract samples and watch the cap during fermentation. QUESTION FOR JANUARY: What are your winemaking resolutions for 2018? Rudy Zuidema Owner and winemaker Zuidema Wine Co. Napa, Calif. My 2018 winemaking resolution is to further embrace old-style winemaking as well as utilizing today's technology. I feel the important, natural and honest wine characteristics that come from vineyard sites will be best expressed using modern winemaking techniques as well as old methods. I find so much depth in wines that are a blend of clean, safe winemaking along with wine that is less controlled. Erica Orr Winemaking consultant Orr Wines and Orr Wine Lab Woodinville, Wash. My winemaking resolutions for 2018 are to spend more time in the vineyards and to taste more old Washington wines. Every year I make an effort to travel to other wine regions and taste together with winemakers to learn and get ideas—it is work that's not work! David Lecomte Head winemaker City Winery New York, N.Y. City Winery's 2018 objective is to continue no/low winemaking intervention techniques. We are getting such unique quality of crop that we have to respect the characteristics of each block. We are doing more and more "wild" fermentation, increasing every year our percentage of organic wine production (18% in 2017) and are doing a lot of small experiments concerning low/no use of sulfites in our wines.
