Cork groups pledge funds, new trees The Portuguese Cork Association and Napa, Calif.-based Cork Quality Council, and its member companies—Portocork, Amorim Cork America, Scott Laboratories, M.A. Silva Corks USA, Lafitte Cork & Capsule and Cork Sup- ply USA—have made a combined donation of $70,000 to assist the victims of the 2017 North Bay wildfires. In addition, the CQC has pledged a donation of 200 cork oak trees to be planted in support of reforestation efforts. According to a press release announcing the donations, the $70,000 went to the North Bay Fire Relief Fund established by the Redwood Credit Union Community Fund in partnership with Redwood Credit Union, The Press Democrat newspaper and state Sen. Mike McGuire. WS Packaging wins awards WS Packaging Group in Green Bay, Wis., an- nounced it had won five awards at the 40th annual Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute Awards Competition in Scottsdale, Ariz. The company won Best of Class in the Offset Wine and Spirits category as well as four category awards including first and second place in off- set, line and prime printing in wine and spirits, second place in digital printing and first place in flexography. Cork Supply and Tonnellerie Ô donate to UC Davis Cork Supply USA and Tonnellerie Ô, based in Benicia, Calif., announced a donation to the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis, to purchase re- quired textbooks for undergraduate and gradu- ate students enrolled in Enology VEN 124. This is the second year the suppliers have made the donation. "We're delighted to continue our annual donation for the purchase of Principles and Practices of Winemaking," senior direc- tor of technical services Greg Hirson said in a statement announcing the donation. "We hope it helps aspiring vintners start off on long, reward- ing careers in the industry." TricorBraun hires packaging consultant Mario Carofanello is a new packaging con- sultant for TricorBraun WinePak in Fairfield, Calif. Carofanello joins the company with more than 20 years of wine industry experi- ence including retail, packaging, closure solutions, software development and barrel production. With a background in hospitality management and software sales, Carofanello attended the wine-marketing program offered through a collaboration of the Organisation Internationale de La Vigne et du Vin (OIV) and the University of California, Davis. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Utah and a certificate in hospitality management. Universal hires VP for quality systems Universal Packaging in Vernon, B.C., hired James Aprile as vice president of quality sys- tems. Aprile worked for the past 15 years at E. & J. Gallo Winery and Gallo Glass Co., where he specialized in quality control, sup- ply chain and plant operations using Lean Six Sigma methodology.
