In 1998, Wilson returned to Oregon and became the winemaker at Silvan Ridge Winery. After assisting at two wineries in Southern Oregon, Wilson became the wine- maker at Foris Vineyards in 2007. Betz returns to Col Solare Master of wine Bob Betz, who worked for nearly 30 years at Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and was the managing director of Col Solare winery when it was founded, has returned to the winery in Benton City, Wash., as consult- ing winemaker. The winery is a joint venture between Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and the Antinori family. Betz retired from Ste. Michelle Wine Estates as vice president of winemak- ing research in 2003 to focus on his own Betz Family Winery, which he founded in 1997. Betz sold that winery in 2011 but continues to work as its consulting winemaker. At Col Solare, Betz will work with Darel Allwine, who remains the winemaker, CEO and chief enolo- gist Renzo Cotarella and vineyard manager Dick Boushey. Management team changes at Stoller Family Stoller Family Estate in Dayton, Ore., hired Jason Tosch as its vineyard manager and Michelle Kaufmann as communications director. The win- ery also announced the promotion of Ben Howe to winemaker and Austin Raz to digital brand manager. Tosch most recently oversaw the vine- yards of Anne Amie Vineyards, and Howe has been with the winery since 2015. Howe will now oversee day-to-day operations at the winery with director of winemaking Melissa Burr. Kaufmann is a graduate of the University of Oregon and most recently was the communications manager for the Oregon Wine Board. Raz joined Stoller in 2016 as marketing assistant. Summerhill wine wins top spot in global competition A 2014 Chardonnay Icewine by Kelowna, B.C.- based Summerhill Pyramid Winery won the top honor in the 2017 Chardonnay du Monde contest held in Burgundy, France. The contest, which seeks to find the best Chardonnay wines throughout the world, received 706 entries from 38 countries. Stephen Cipes, the founder and owner of the winery, said in a news release, "Win- ning the No. 1 Chardonnay wine in the world is a triumph for organic growing and winemaking." WSU student earns national fellowship Connor Eck, a se- nior at Washington State University Tri- Cities, originally from Del Mar, Calif., has been named a na- tional Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a Boston- based nonprofit organization. As a student winemaker in WSU's Blended Learning program, Eck worked with local growers and winemakers to reduce water used in grapegrowing and winemaking. CENTRAL New winemaker at Haak Vineyards Tiffany Farrell is the new winemaker of Haak Vineyards in Santa Fe, Texas. Farrell, a native of Texas, has nearly a decade of winemaking experience gained at wineries in California and Idaho. In addition to a bachelor's degree in mi- crobiology from Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi, Farrel also holds a master's degree in hydrologic sciences from Boise State University.
