April 2017 WINES&VINES 25 WINE INDUSTRY NEWS New winemaker at Summit Lake Summit Lake Vineyards & Winery owner Bob Brakesman is hand- ing off winemaking duties to his son Brian Brakesman, who has more than 20 years of winemaking experience and most recently was head winemaker at Ledson Winery in Sonoma Valley. Brian Brakes- man will be making the Summit Lake wines as well as the winery's new brand Red Thread Wines, which he launched with his wife, Gretchen Brakesman. Mira building winery in Yountville Jim "Bear" Dyke, owner of Mira Winery, announced he had pur- chased 10.5 acres of land south of the city of Yountville as the site for a planned winery scheduled to begin construction this sum- mer. The winery will be used for both production and hospitality and is being designed by wine- maker and Mira co-founder Gus- tavo Gonzales. Silverado announces new partner Miguel Luna joined the vineyard- management company Silverado Farming Co. as partner. Founded in 2001 by Pete Richmond, Arnulfo Solario and Stanley Zervas, Sil- verado Farming Co. now manages more than 600 acres of vineyards for clients including Dana Estates, Melka Wines, Vineyard 29 and others. Prior to joining Silverado in 2015, Luna held winemaking posi- tions at Pahlmeyer Winery, Atelier Melka and other wineries. Next generation takes over at Stewart Cellars Siblings James and Caroline Stew- art, along with Blair Guthrie, hus- band of Caroline Stewart, are now managing Stewart Cellars, which was founded in 2000 by their father, Michael Stewart. The Stewarts and Guthrie now oversee all aspects of the winery's operations from sales and marketing to finance to vineyard management, winemaking and managing their staff. Stewart Cellars also added two new wines to its portfolio, a 2016 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc and a 2016 So- noma Mountain rosé. Napa winery owner donates $5 million for flood victims Kieu Hoang, owner of an epony- mous winery in the Carneros AVA, donated $5 million to the city of San Jose's relief fund for victims of a Feb. 21 flood that inundated the city's Rock Springs neighborhood with water from a nearby creek. The flooding forced the evacuation of more than 14,000 people and caused widespread damage, leav- ing many homes uninhabitable. Doumani launches new brand Carl Doumani, founder of Stags' Leap Winery and Quixote Winery, launched a new brand called ¿Como No?, which is produced from a 2-acre vineyard in the Stags Leap District AVA. The wine is a Petite Sirah made by Aaron Pott, and the vineyard is man- aged by Michael Wolf. Doumani sold Quixote to a Chinese buyer in 2009 and used some of the pro- ceeds to develop the vineyard for the new brand.
