24 WINES&VINES April 2017 CALIFORNIA Mangahas promoted at Williams Selyem Jeff Mangahas is the new director of winemaking at Williams Selyem Winery in Healdsburg. Manga- has joined the winery in 2011 as winemaker and previously had been the assistant winemaker at Dutton-Goldfield Winery and wine- maker at Hartford Family Winery. Before earning his master's degree in enology from the University of California, Davis, Mangahas was a medical research scientist. Knapp joins Stolpman as winemaker Kyle Knapp is the new wine- maker at Stolpman Vineyards in Solvang. Knapp worked as Stolp- man Vineyards' assistant wine- maker from 2006 through 2009 and then made wine at nearby Beckmen Vineyards, where he worked for five vintages. Knapp returned to Stolpman for the 2016 harvest. Matt Nocas is the winery's new assistant wine- maker, and Shashi Moorman con- tinues to consult for the winery. Jeff Cohn opening tasting room in Sonoma Jeff Cohn Cellars is moving from its location in Oakland to a new tasting room on the historic square in the city of Sonoma. The tasting room will be located at 535 First St. W. and feature multiple seating areas as well as a glass-enclosed private area. Founder Jeff Cohn also is moving production of his Rhône varieties and single- vineyard Zinfandels to a facility in Santa Rosa. New blending winemaker at Thornhill Cos. Thomas Fertel joined Thornhill Cos. in Santa Maria as its new blending winemaker. Fertel is a native of Louisiana who earned a degree in chemistry from Louisi- ana State University and followed a passion for wine to California, where he worked in winemaking while earning a master's degree in crop science and viticulture from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Prior to joining Thornhill Cos., Fertel was the enologist at Frank Fam- ily Vineyards in Napa Valley and most recently was the harvest winemaker at Wildhorse Vine- yards in Templeton. Epoch opens new tasting room in historic winery Epoch Estate Wines in Paso Robles opened its new tasting room in the "historic and beloved bones of York Mountain Win- ery." The tasting room is located in the remnants of the winery established in 1882 as the first bonded facility on the Central Coast. The structure had been condemned in 2003 after being damaged in an earthquake, and in 2010 Epoch owners Liz and Bill Armstrong purchased the property out of foreclosure. The reconstruction was done by Lake Flato Architects and included the preservation of original redwood beams as well as bricks fired on the property in 1906. Executive changes at Jackson Family Wines Rick Tigner is now president and CEO of Jackson Family Wines in Santa Rosa, and former presi- dent Hugh Reimers is chief mar- keting officer overseeing brand and market development. Mitch Davis was promoted to senior vice president for winery opera- tions, and Graham Weerts is the new senior vice president for vineyard operations. FSU's Fugelsang dies Ken Fugelsang, professor emeri- tus of enology at California State University, Fresno, died Feb. 20, according to friends. He joined CSU Fresno in 1972 and published more than 150 technical papers and 14 books. During his service to the enology program, Fugel- sang also managed Fresno State's 20,000-case commercial winery, where his students earned more than 350 awards in major wine competitions.
