Faces& Forums Napa Auction NEWSMAKERS 2011, allowing Napa Valley Vintners (NVV) to reach the milestone of $100 million do- nated to the community during the event's 31-year history. The trade association will distribute the 2011 funds in October to area nonprofit groups that provide health care, youth development services and af- fordable housing in the Napa Valley. This year, vintners brought iPads to the "Marketplace" staged at the Culinary Institute of America's herb terrace to facili- tate live-auction attendees bidding in the e-auction. That day's barrel auction raised $1.2 million, with the lot from Shafer Vine- yards raising $59,500. S Generosity didn't end at Napa County limits. The online e-auction raised $360,000—about $75,000 more than the 2010 total—with many of the winners bidding from as far away as Hong Kong. The No. 1 e-auction item was a lot from Domaine Chandon, which sold for $16,000. "The non-attending presence was more than ever," according to NVV communica- tions director Terry Hall, who said that 55 of the 93 successful e-auction lot winners were actually at the event. "It used to be the folks that were here went and played on the e-auction. Now it is legitimately out there in the world, and not dependent on the place." —Kate Lavin 24 Wines & Vines JULY 2011 Hits $100 Million Technology plays key role as bids reach milestone t.
