Quails' Gate names estate president John Sandor is the new estate president of Quails' Gate winery in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley. Before joining Quails' Gate, Sandor was senior vice president of Sutton Place Hotels and Sand- man Signature properties. CENTRAL Oklahoma could loosen alcohol laws The Oklahoma state Senate ap- proved a bill that would let state residents decide in a general elec- tion to loosen the state's stringent laws regulating alcoholic bever- ages. The measure would need to be approved by the state House of Representatives before going to voters in November. Among other changes, SJR 68 would allow grocery stores to sell wine and full- strength beer. Arizona shipping bill passes Senate A measure backed by the Wine In- stitute and Free the Grapes to allow Arizona residents to purchase wine online or over the phone and have it shipped it to their homes passed the state Senate in February. The legislation needs the approval of the state House before it's enacted in to law. Arizona currently only al- lows wineries producing less than 20,000 gallons per year (about 8,400 cases) to take orders by phone or online. The Arizona Wine Growers Association supports the bill as a way to help state wineries increase production without losing any direct-to-consumer sales. Iowa industry awards Ken Groninga, the winemaker and owner of Eagle City Winery in Iowa Falls, Iowa, received the Iowa Wine Growers Association's Winemaker of the Year award Feb. 28, during the association's annual confer- ence. Corey Goodhue, owner of North River Valley Vineyard, ac- cepted the group's Vineyard of the Year Award. Groninga and his wife Carolyn started growing grapes in 1996 and opened the winery in 2000. Goodhue first planted grapes at his family's soybean and corn farm in 2006 and now has 9 acres of vineyards. EAST Fuchs honored for research Marc Fuchs, an expert on viruses affecting vegetable and fruit crops, won the 2016 Research Award from the New York Wine & Grape Foundation for his work protecting the state's grape industry. Fuchs is an associate professor in the Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biol- ogy Section of Cornell University's School of Integrative Plant Science. He studies the biology and ecol- ogy of viruses that directly impact the economic viability of New York grapes. He was honored with the Research Award on March 3 in Miranda Porterfield Corey Goodhue (left) accepts the award from Mike White of Iowa State University. Marc Fuchs
