April 2016 WINES&VINES 23 WINE INDUSTRY NEWS CALIFORNIA Ridge, contractor fined for unsafe housing The U.S. Department of Labor fined Ridge Vine- yards and Four Seasons Vineyard Management for "deplorable housing condi- tions" at a building used as a workers' residence on a property owned by the winery in Sonoma County. The department cited the companies for exposed wiring, insufficient exits that posed a risk in the event of a fire, a bathroom that lacked proper ventila- tion and was not deemed sanitary and other viola- tions. Both companies are working to rectify the violations and have paid $42,300 in penalties. The Department of Labor also recovered $1,750 in back wages that the contractor illegally deducted as rent. Cuneo named partner at Turrentine Marc Cuneo was named partner of Novato-based Turrentine Brokerage. Cuneo joined Turrentine in 2010 as bulk wine broker and has since worked with a large portfolio of clients in the United States as well as negotiating deals for European and South Amer- ican wines. Cuneo also is often invited to speak about bulk wine market trends at a number of wine industry events. Hess hires VP of operations Matthew Wood is the new vice president of opera- tions for Hess Family Wine Estates. Wood will oversee the company's operations department as well as supply planning. Prior to joining Hess, Wood worked at Treasury Wine Estates, where he held several posi- tions in strategic planning, operations and logistics. Moueix launches new brand Christian Moueix, the owner of Dominus Es- tate in Oakville and eight wineries in France, an- nounced the launch of his new brand, Ulysses. The wine is an estate-bottled Cabernet Sauvignon with some Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Grapes for the wine come from a vineyard situated along the Oakville Bench at the foot of the Mayacamas Range. The property was part of the original Charles Hopper Ranch in the 1800s, and Moueix purchased it in 2008. "Since then," Moueix said in a news release, "we have undertaken meticu- lous vineyard restoration. We needed time to study the soil types and microcli- mates of the property." Beckstoffers buy Dancing Hares Tuck and Boo Beckstoffer purchased the Dancing Hares Winery and Vine- yard in St. Helena, Calif. The purchase includes a 20-acre estate vineyard, winery, brands and inven- tory. Tuck Beckstoffer is the son of Andy Beckstof- fer, who is the founder and owner of Beckstoffer Vineyards.
