W i n e s & V i n e s D e C e M b e r 2 0 1 4 75 Grapevine Pest Found in Pennsylvania R eading, Pa.—The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture confirmed that a new invasive species, the spotted lanternfly (SLF), has been found in Berks County, Pa. The department issued a quarantine to prevent movement of the pest, which uses the Vitis species as one of its hosts. Dr. Michael Saunders, professor of ento- mology at Pennsylvania State University, told Wines & Vines that the pests in Berks County were found on wild grapevines among other plants. The 1-inch-long insect uses its piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on the sap of trees and vines. The insects excrete a fluid that coats leaves and stems and encourages mold growth. Richard Blair, owner of Blair Vineyards in kutztown, Pa., said his son-in-law saw an SLF about 1 mile from a vineyard Blair owns within the quarantine area. "Of- ficials think that in the two years the SLF has been in Berks County, it has not moved more than about 2 miles from what may be the source of the infestation." While some reports indicate that the insect egg masses are cold sensitive, SLF eggs survived last winter's colder than nor- mal temperatures in Pennsylvania and hatched this spring. Grapegrowers will have the winter to look for egg masses laid by last season's adult insects before nymphs hatch in late April. —Linda Jones McKee WineEast News winesandvines.com Learn more: Search keywords "Spotted lanternfly" - B E C O PA D - Y E A S T & E N Z Y M E S - C R U S H PA D E Q U I P M E N T - S T E R I L E F I LT R AT I O N - W I N E R Y H O S E - O A K A LT E R N AT I V E S Excellent for spraying: VINEYARDS, vegetables, orchards, nurseries, Christmas trees, mosquitoes, cattle, chicken houses, etc. Low Maintenance High Performance Motor Models available S a l es C om pa n y – Mist Sprayers – References available in your area American Made We offer a complete line of low volume mist blowers.
