Swedish wine group honors Napa, Sonoma regions The leaders of the Swedish wine club Mun- skänkarna named Sonoma and Napa coun- ties as its wine regions of the year in 2014. The group has more than 23,000 mem- bers in Sweden and Finland. According to the Sonoma County Vintners' group, who hosted a delegation of Munskänkarna lead- ers (below), it's the first time the organization has conferred the honor on an American wine region. The group will be offering seminars and tastings on Sonoma and Napa county wineries in Sweden and Finland throughout the year. Details: munskankarna.se. Promotions at V. Sattui, Castello di Amorosa Laura Orozco is the new winemaker at V. Sattui in St. Helena, and Peter Velleno is the new winemaker at Castello di Amorosa in Calistoga. Both Orozco and Velleno had been associate winemakers at their respec- tive wineries, which are both owned by Dario Sattui. Before joining V. Sattui, Oro- zco worked in winemaking at Franciscan Estate, while Velleno was the winemaker at Hartwell Vineyards in Napa Valley before joining Castello di Amorosa. Ennis promoted to winemaker at Freestone Justin Ennis was promoted to the position of wine- maker at Joseph P h e l p s V i n e - yards' Freestone Vineyards estate on the Sonoma C o u n t y c o a s t . Ennis will oversee day-to-day operations at Freestone while working with vice presi- dent and director of winemaking Damian Parker. Ennis joined Freestone in 2007 as cellarmaster. Vintners plant vineyard for college Steve Lemley and Nate Hasper, winemakers and co-owners of Pulchella Winery in Santa Clarita, developed a vineyard at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita (above) with transplanted vines donated from Remo Belli Vineyards in Paso Robles. Cuttings from the vines eventually will be used to develop an adjacent parcel of land to expand the vineyard. The school will use the vineyard to support classes in its culi- nary arts and wine studies program. Kornell new GM at Parallel Paula Kornell is the new general manager of Parallel Napa Valley winery. A native of Napa, Kornell has been in the wine industry for the past 30 years and was most recently the general manager of Oakville Ranch in Napa Valley. Details: parallelwines.com.
