36 WINES&VINES December 2017 THE BIGGEST AND BEST OF 2O17 DTC SALES Fastest Growing DtC Market PENNSYLVANIA Direct-to-consumer (DtC) shipments to Pennsylvania surged when the state, the largest still banning the practice, opened to deliveries in 2016. This year, the growth rate of shipments to the state soundly trounced the 117% increase seen last year, rising 432% in the latest 12 months to $48 million in sales on a volume of 125,876 cases. Pennsylvania is now the 10th largest destination for DtC ship- ments, which makes sense considering it was already the 12th largest state for wine consumption in the country. QUALITY STAINLESS TANKS Best Growth Rate by DtC Price Segment $8-$10.99 Democratization of DtC was a key trend in 2017, as wineries began shipping a greater volume of lower priced bottles to consumers. Chan- nel-leading growth in the $8-$10.99 price segment reflected this, with 326,685 cases of wine worth more than $38 million flowing to consum- ers in 2017 (an increase of 37%). This is more than double the 17% growth rate the channel saw as a whole. While just 1.5% of the chan- nel by value, the $8-$10.99 segment now represents nearly 6% of all cases shipped DtC. 432% PENNSYLVANIA
