December 2017 WINES&VINES 37 THE BIGGEST AND BEST OF 2O17 WINERY COUNT Biggest Percent Increase in New Wineries FLORIDA California is home to 46% of U.S. wineries, followed by Washington and Oregon with 8% each of the national count. Together with New York, the states represent 97% of all U.S. wine production. Yet the state that saw the biggest per- centage gain in wineries in 2017 was Florida, where the number of wineries increased 36% from 55 to 75. Michigan also gained ground, adding 33 wineries for a total of 184, approximately 2% of the national total. This August, the winery database maintained by Wines Vines Analytics counted more than 10,000 wineries in North America. Biggest Sales Growth by Winery Region SONOMA COUNTY California accounts for 85% of direct-to-consumer (DtC) shipments nationwide. But the channel's growth means that shipments are no longer confined to top-end wineries in Napa. Among the regions claiming a fast-rising share of shipments is Sonoma, which rose from 18% of DtC activity in 2016 to 20% in 2017. This represented an addi- tional 292,239 cases worth $105 million, the strongest case growth of any region nationwide.
