38 WINES&VINES December 2017 THE BIGGEST AND BEST OF 2O17 FLASH The data team at Wines Vines Analytics captures the wine offers taking place almost daily by flash resellers (websites sell- ing wines at discounted prices for a limited amount of time). This year, the team monitored 18 websites and recorded offers for wines produced by domestic wineries. Flash activity contin- ued to slow in 2017: The 5,498 offers in the 12 months through October 2017 were 10% lower than a year earlier. Site with the Most Offers INVINO Invino made the most offers for domestic wines for the second year in a row, accounting for 22% of all offers. Invino's 1,236 total offers numbered 380 more than Last Call Wines, which offered the second-highest num- ber of deals. Based in Sonoma, Calif., Invino regularly holds spe- cial sales events in which it makes a flurry of offers. In Janu- ary 2017, for example, the site made 255 domestic wine offers, accounting for 44% of the monthly total from all wine flash resellers. Best Day for Flash Offers JAN. 2 Nearly 4% of all the flash offers for domestic wines in the past 12 months occurred on the second day of 2017. Wines Vines Analytics recorded 209 offers Jan. 2, making it the top day in terms of number of offers. Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, saw the second-highest total, with 156 offers, and the third-highest total (135) came on the Fourth of July. Best Flash Offer Based on a discount of 40% and a perfect 100-point score from the Wine Advocate newsletter, a 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon by Faust was the best flash offer in the 12 months ending October 2017. The wine has a suggested retail price of $75, and Last Call Wines offered it for $45 per bottle.
