22 WINES&VINES July 2017 WINE INDUSTRY NEWS CALIFORNIA New winemaker at Emeritus David Lattin is the new winemaker at Emeritus Vineyards in Sebasto- pol. Lattin has 32 vintages of ex- perience, which include 15 years as winemaker for Kuleto Estate in Napa Valley as well as overseeing the winemaking program of Merus Wines since 2013 and serving as winemaker and general manager of Acacia. Lattin joins vineyard manager Kirk Lokka and owner Brice Jones. Handley founder retiring Milla Handley, winemaker and owner of Handley Cellars in the Anderson Valley of Mendocino County, announced her retirement. Handley's daughters, Lulu McClel- lan and Megan Handley Warren, will take over the business as co- owners, with McClellan acting as national sales manager. Former co-winemaker Randy Shock was promoted to lead winemaker, and Travis Scott is the winery's new associate vice president. Accord- ing to a news release announcing Handley's retirement, in 1978 she was one of the first women to graduate with a degree in fermen- tation sciences from the University of California, Davis, and in 1982 was one of the first woman wine- makers in the United States with an eponymous wine brand. Melka joins Andis Wines The winemaking consultancy team of Atelier Melka, led by Philippe Melka, has been appointed wine- maker at Andis Wines in Ama- dor County. Melka first started working with Andis Wines in December 2016. Melka's team includes director of winemaking Maayan Koschitzky and assistant winemakers Meghan Zobeck and Marie Laure Ammons. GM promotion at Deerfield Addison Rex was promoted to the position of general manager at Deerfield Ranch Winery in Kenwood. Rex joined the winery in 2009 as a seasonal harvest worker and later earned the posi- tion of operations manager, which he held for six years. As general manager, Rex will be responsible for the management of day-to-day operations at the winery as well as the development and implementa- tion of long-term planning. Rex is the nephew of winery founder and managing partner Robert Rex. Purple Heart appoints new winemaker John Moynier is the new head winemaker of Purple Heart Wines.
