Colorado to survey spread of phylloxera Agriculture officials in Colorado are inviting growers to take a voluntary and free survey so they can get a better handle on the presence and spread of the insect phylloxera in the state's vineyards. The survey is in response to members of the Colorado industry voting during the annual VinCO meeting in January to request the Colorado Department of Agricul- ture (CDA) and Cooperative Ag Pest Survey make the vineyard louse its priority this season. State officials require a vineyard man- ager be present while a sample is collected, and growers should contact Jeanne Ring with the CDA to set up a survey. The pest has been found in eight vineyards in the state. EAST New winemaker at Hunt Country Craig Hosbach is the new wine- maker at Hunt Country Vineyards in Branchport, N.Y. Hosbach previ- ously was the winemaker at Tug Hill Vineyards, and before that was the winemaker at Thousand Is- lands Winery. Hosbach is also vice president of the Northern New York Grape Growers Association and helped launch a teaching winery at Jefferson Community College in Watertown, N.Y. Virginia Vine raises $250,000 for cancer research The V Foundation for Cancer Re- search announced the third annual Virginia Vine event raised more than $250,000. The sold-out gala was held April 8 at Boxwood Es- tate Winery in Middleburg, Va., and was hosted by Joe Theismann, for- mer Washington Redskins quarter- back, and featured speaker Scott Hamilton, Olympic champion, can- cer survivor and activist. SUPPLIER Monvera moves into new office Monvera Glass Décor, a supplier of wine bottle decoration with a spe- cialty in screen printing, opened a second office Napa, Calif. The new office is located in the Napa Valley Commons area. Managing the new office is Phil Orem, who joined the Monvera team at the end of 2016. Orem has experience in a variety of sales, business-development and management roles on both the winery side and supplier side of the wine industry. New account manager at Lafitte Lafitte announced the hiring of Peter McAfee as a new sales ac- count manager for the Pacific Northwest. McAfee is a former production manager and bottling line manager and was a Lafitte customer of 10 years. Cooperage promotes sales and operations coordinator Tonnellerie Ô in Benicia, Calif., promoted Sabine Geul to the post of oak sales and operations coordinator. Geul joined the Cork Supply USA customer service team in 1999 and has served as customer service lead since 2011. In her new role, Geul will support the oak sales team, the operations manager and the vice president and general manager of Tonnel- lerie Ô and Creative Oak.
