New winemaker at Rutherford Wine Co. Jay Turnipseed joins Rutherford Wine Co. as winemaker. Turnip- seed will oversee all winemaking and production of the company's multi-brand portfolio. Most re- cently, Turnipseed was the senior winemaker for Franciscan Estate and Mount Veeder Winery. Turnip- seed also gained experience as an intern and enologist at Gallo of Sonoma in the Russian River Val- ley. He holds a degree in viticulture and enology from University of California, Davis. CK Mondavi continues campaign to support military families CK Mondavi Family Vineyards in Napa Valley is beginning its sixth annual donation campaign for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, a nonprofit group that supports critically injured military personnel and the families of members of the U.S. armed forces who are lost in service. Since the first campaign 2011, the winery has raised more than $165,000 for the fund and has set its goal for this year at $50,000. Former Napa Vintners spokesman dies Terry Hall, described as a "cham- pion of the Napa Valley and Yosem- ite National Park," died April 20 at age 59 following a long illness. Hall came to Napa Valley in 1997 and held leadership positions at Meado- wood Resort, Trefethen Vineyards, Napa Valley Vintners and launched his own communications firm, TH Ink. Hall was a founding board member of the Symposium of Pro- fessional Wine Writers and served on the boards of Clinic Ole and Visit Napa Valley. Before working in Napa, Hall worked at the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite and managed May Lake High Sierra Camp, White Wolf Lodge and Yosemite Lodge. NORTHWEST Oregon senator honored by wine groups WineAmerica and Winegrape Growers of America presented the Grape and Wine Public Policy Leadership Award to U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon in a cer- emony held in Washington, D.C., in late April. According to a statement from WineAmerica, Wyden has been a "tireless supporter" of the American wine industry for years by helping to modernize the Al- cohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau and sponsoring legislation to modernize and reform federal alcohol excise taxes. CENTRAL New extension enologist at Texas A&M Andreea Botezatu, Ph.D., joined the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service as assistant professor and extension enology specialist in January. Originally from Romania, Botezatu earned her bachelor's degree in horticulture in 2000, with a major in enology, from the Uni- versity of Agronomy and Veterinary Sciences Ion Ionescu de la Brad in Iasi, Romania, and her master's degree in agricultural management from the same university in 2001. She worked as a commercial wine- maker first in Romania and then in Ontario, Canada, and earned a Ph.D. in enology from Brock Uni- versity in St. Catharines, Ontario, in 2014.
